Jim Stull
After accepting the position of apprentice news cameraman, Jim Stull learned quickly from his mentors and took extensive training courses in lighting, editing, producing and directing to further hone his skills. He has also studied editing, directing and took camera classes at a local television station where he learned camera techniques, on-line video editing and live directing.
Furthering his expertise, Jim enrolled in the Electronic Cinematography Workshop at the renowned Maine Photographic Workshop in Rockport, Maine, where he was immersed in film style video cinematography training. Catching the attention of his managers Jim was rapidly promoted to Chief Photographer where he was responsible for developing and managing a full time staff of ENG (Electronic News Gathering) cameramen. In this new role he was also honing his directing skills and was soon producing and directing live interactive call in programs and special location productions for U.S. Senators, congressional leaders and cabinet officials. He also oversaw the quality of the daily satellite news feed to hundreds of stations throughout North America.
Not long after Jim was promoted again, this time to Producer, where he was responsible for the full production of documentaries, Video News Releases (VNR’s) educational programs, public service announcements (PSA’s) and program introductions and closes. In this position, Jim created and produced original programming for PBS Television about Senator’s activities that affected their constituents.
In 1991, Jim relocated to New York City, the top market in the country. Jim has shot, produced, directed and edited for clients ranging from CBS News, IBM Television, BBC and The Gannett Corporation, among many other news and corporate clients.
In 2014, Jim relocated to the Portland, Oregon area for family reasons. Work in this new market is challenging; and Jim’s former clients continue to call when a service is needed in this area. He also has broadened his scope, working now with Certified Legal Video Services (CLVS) credentials.
While Jim shoots on different formats he believes there is only one standard: excellence. Jim is always furthering his technical and creative expertise by constant education and study. From lighting, editing and camera workshops to a NYU course in commercial directing, Jim believes staying on top of the newest techniques and technologies is an important asset for all of his clients. Although established in the Portland Metropolitan area, Jim is often asked to shoot on location in Canada, Europe and the East Coast. Jim held United Nations and NYPD Press Credentials and has had Secret Service clearance. He is a current member of the MCA-I (ITVA) and NCRA.
Along side his technical skills, Jim’s greatest strength may be in how he is regarded by clients, talent and crew; a consummate professional who puts the set at ease, is comfortable to work with and gets the job done not only on time and on budget, but where it matters most; on the screen.
